1)Share Models with Autodesk BIM 360 Glue
To coordinate Revit models with other models in BIM 360 Glue, you must use the Revit add-in and use the Glue feature to share Revit models to the BIM 360 cloud.
To share Revit models directly from Revit
  1. Ensure that you have installed the BIM 360 add-in for Autodesk Revit. The add-in can be installed during Revit installation or you can download it from the profile menu within BIM 360 Glue.
  2. In Revit, open the model(s) in a 3D View.
  3. Click Add-ins tab  BIM 360 panel  Glue. Sign in with your Autodesk ID and follow the instructions.
2)Review and Resolve Clashes

When you share Revit models with BIM 360 Glue, you can easily visualize the areas of the model that need review and coordination. With Clash Pinpoint, you can pinpoint and resolve clashing elements in Revit and then reload the model back to Glue to share the updated version with the project team.

3)Sync BIM 360 Field Equipment Properties with Revit Model

With the BIM 360 add-in, you can sync Autodesk BIM 360 Field equipment properties with the originally shared Revit model.

If a Revit model is shared with BIM 360 Glue with the BIM 360 add-in and then shared with BIM 360 Field, a Field administrator can add equipment properties which can be loaded back to the original RVT file.

A sports centre renovation project created with
Edificius has been awarded at the BIM Digital Awards 2019

This year BIM Digital Awards have been awarded, among other projects, to the construction redevelopment project and energy retrofit of the Monviso Sporting Club in Turin during the DIGITAL & BIM 2019 event. The project has been designed by Paolo Chiappero Architetto’s studio, which adopted ACCA software‘s BIM technology.
DIGITAL & BIM is an initiative dedicated to the transformation of the construction sector through digitalization, technologies and innovation. This annual event supports this sector by exploring its potential and promoting the implementation of new technologies, tools and processes to improve profitability and efficiency and create a smarter construction industry.

Project features
Let’s see the description of this winning experience together with architect Paolo Chiappero and BIM Operator Federico Caon.
The Monviso Sporting Club renovation project has been implemented for functional lots from 2015 to 2019 and it involves the construction of a multidisciplinary structure having:
  • 11 tennis courts
  • 5 padel tennis courts
  • 3 beach volleyball courts seasonally opened and with heated sand
  • 1 soccer field
  • 2 outdoor swimming pools
  • 1 tennis stadium with a 1500 p. stand
  • 1 Club house of 1500 square meters with: changing rooms, bar restaurant, reception, kindergarten, gym, spa, coworking, conference room.
  • 10.000 square meters of green areas.
2,500,000 euros have already been spent of the total planned investment of 3,500,000 euros.

State of the places before the intervention

BIM model of the entire project
Let’s now take a closer look at this sports centre redevelopment project.
Objectives and project choices
The Club aims to become a place for leisure and to encourage healthy and sustainable activities and beat a sedentary lifestyle.

Restaurant: project renderings comparison – implementation
In addition to the sports areas, the plan envisages building coworking areas and a kindergarten that will enable many Club users to combine work and / or family commitments with leisure.
Given the considerable design challenges, this design studio has opted for the use of a BIM Authoring software (specifically Edificius by ACCA software) beginning with a technical-financial feasibility study.Implementation of functional and efficient sports facilities

All the sports facilities have been designed to meet homologation parameters in terms of energy efficiency, having the following criteria:
  1. Lighting quality: playing fields lighting with high energy efficiency LED systems. The playing fields have been illuminated with high-efficiency LED floodlights to achieve the levels of lighting required by the Federations (300 lux) with quality control (uniformity, intensity and anti-glare).
  2. Energy quality and shape of the pressostatic winter covers: construction of double-membrane roofs.
In recent years, three new double membrane (with high energy efficiency) pressostatic roofs have been created to have indoor courts during winter. Roofs have been co-designed in order to obtain an ideal conformation for the competitive approval of the courts. In particular, the roof of the two padel tennis courts was implemented with an innovative methodology (unique in Italy) which provides for the construction of a perimeter stand in prestressed concrete simply resting on the ground to support the pressostatic roof. Therefore obtaining a building for 200 spectators.
  3. Quality building envelope: Construction of a tennis venue with a high energy efficiency fixed structure and acoustic climate control.
The tennis venue has been created from the remodelling of a steel structure from the 70s. The new curtain walls have been made with sandwich panels in sheet metal with 10 cm interposed polyurethane. In addition, a study was carried out on the acoustic climate to dampen the echo of the blows through a sound absorbing wall in the first 2ml.
  4. Architectural and landscape quality: Building common spaces (club house and external areas) that restore the image of a healthy environment integrated in the surrounding environment.
The transition into “immersive” virtual reality enabled by BIM technology allowed to implement formal choices in agreement with the Client.

BIM model view of the club house project
Innovative use of BIM methodologies to overcome project challenges
The most complex aspects of the design phase concern the structures geometry, in order to obtain the relating approvals and to respect the established budget.
The above listed objectives have been fulfilled through the adoption of BIM design methods (totally carried out by the architect’s studio) and file sharing systems in Cloud for real-time sharing of the project models between companies.
In this way, the executive files (IFC or CAD) provided by the company were then integrated in the original BIM model.

BIM model view of the swimming pool
Aspects of sustainability management and results achieved
From a management perspective, the drastic reduction in energy consumption (65%) allows to generate important operating budget margins.
The quality of the sports facilities, on the other hand, has generated considerable positive feedback from both competitive and non-competitive users. The number of members has been increasing since the past three years.

Reception: comparison project redering – implementation
In the years 2015 and 2016 the new Sports Club was selected to host ATP professional tennis tournaments exceeding all the required standards.

Introduction of Coordination Models

About Coordination Models
After using Navisworks to generate a coordination model, you can link the NWD or NWC file to your Revit model as a reference for your design.

This feature is useful when a team from another discipline does not use Revit for modeling. It allows you to compare your Revit model to a non-Revit model for coordination purposes. By loading the updated coordination model on a regular basis (such as weekly), you minimize the risk of clashes. This practice can expedite the design process and reduce the need to make changes, saving time and money for the entire design team.

Coordination models

A coordination model is a 3D design used for virtual cross-checking of various disciplines through the design, pre-construction, and construction phases of a project. For the Coordination Model feature, use an NWD or NWC file. NWD and NWC are native file formats of Navisworks. Project teams use Navisworks to combine multi-disciplinary design data into a single coordination model.
Examples
  • An architect uses Revit to design a building. A structural engineer uses another software product for the building's structural design. The architect wants to bring the structural design into Revit, using it as a reference to ensure that architectural elements align correctly with structural elements of the design.
  • A designer fabricator uses a 3D modeler to design the exterior envelope of a building, using a complex system of curtain walls. The architect wants to bring this model into Revit, using it as a reference to make sure the building's interior design fits correctly within the envelope.
  • An architect uses Revit to design a building. A civil engineer uses another software product for the detailed site design. The architect wants to bring the site design into Revit, using it as an underlay to correctly plan the layout of the building on the site.
Note: Navisworks models are cached locally. Therefore models are not limited to use in only Navisworks.

Using the coordination model in Revit

When you link a coordination model into a Revit model, the coordination model displays in the current view. It is surrounded by a bounding box, which displays when you move the cursor over the coordination model. When you select the box, the status bar displays the family and type Coordination Model : Navisworks Model, followed by the Navisworks model name. The Properties palette displays the file path, name, and other properties for the coordination model.
Tip: To select the coordination model more easily, use the Select elements by face option.
In Revit, the coordination model is treated as a single item. Revit cannot distinguish individual elements within the coordination model. You cannot select items in the coordination model, nor see their properties.
After linking the coordination model, you can do the following in Revit:
  • Display the coordination model in 3D views and 2D views, including plans, elevations, and sections.
  • Pin the coordination model to lock it in place, so it does not inadvertently move in relation to the Revit model.
  • Define phasing for the coordination model.
  • Define transparency for the coordination model to distinguish it from the Revit model. Use the Visibility/Graphics dialog to set its visibility and define transparency.
  • For worksharing, add the coordination model to a workset.
  • Print the coordination model as part of a Revit view.
  • Export the coordination model to an image as part of a Revit view.
  • Unload the coordination model to temporarily remove it from the model (for example, to improve performance). When you reload the model, it reloads to the same position and orientation.
  • Reload the coordination model to reflect recent updates.
  • Remove (delete) the coordination model from the Revit model.
Because textures are not included with the coordination model, it cannot be rendered as part of a Revit view.

7. BIM VALIDATION / BIM CHECKING SOFTWARE

When combining 3D models from multiple project teams issues can often be uncovered.
These problems can be solved in the virtual model at a much lower cost compared to after the construction team has started the work on site.
Sometimes there are thousands of issues to track.
This is why the following BIM checking/workflow tools are essential to gain the true benefits of BIM.
OpenBIM webapp to centralize issues and communications for resolution.

8. PRECONSTRUCTION BIM 4D/5D SOFTWARE

BIMs can be used to gain efficiencies for contractors in their estimating and scheduling workflows.
Model elements can be scheduled over time to identify phasing and sequencing challenges.
Elements can also be automatically counted and tied to estimating databases to generate more accurate 5D construction estimates that will update as the model changes.
This is definitely not “Hollywood BIM”!

WHY IS BIM SOFTWARE SO IMPORTANT FOR OUR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY?:

Architects, Engineers and Contractors are using BIM software to plan work, analyse work and execute work.
By using BIM tools and BIM processes correctly some companies are starting to gain a competitive advantage.
In fact, Building Information Modeling software solutions are mandatory for some bidding processes especially for certain government contracts.

"Evolution of BIM implementation came in parallel with willingness to collaborate and share project information, the move toward integrated practice that is much talked about in the industry."
