A sports centre renovation project created with
Edificius has been awarded at the BIM Digital Awards 2019

This year BIM Digital Awards have been awarded, among other projects, to the construction redevelopment project and energy retrofit of the Monviso Sporting Club in Turin during the DIGITAL & BIM 2019 event. The project has been designed by Paolo Chiappero Architetto’s studio, which adopted ACCA software‘s BIM technology.
DIGITAL & BIM is an initiative dedicated to the transformation of the construction sector through digitalization, technologies and innovation. This annual event supports this sector by exploring its potential and promoting the implementation of new technologies, tools and processes to improve profitability and efficiency and create a smarter construction industry.

Project features
Let’s see the description of this winning experience together with architect Paolo Chiappero and BIM Operator Federico Caon.
The Monviso Sporting Club renovation project has been implemented for functional lots from 2015 to 2019 and it involves the construction of a multidisciplinary structure having:
  • 11 tennis courts
  • 5 padel tennis courts
  • 3 beach volleyball courts seasonally opened and with heated sand
  • 1 soccer field
  • 2 outdoor swimming pools
  • 1 tennis stadium with a 1500 p. stand
  • 1 Club house of 1500 square meters with: changing rooms, bar restaurant, reception, kindergarten, gym, spa, coworking, conference room.
  • 10.000 square meters of green areas.
2,500,000 euros have already been spent of the total planned investment of 3,500,000 euros.

Let’s now take a closer look at this sports centre redevelopment project.
Objectives and project choices
The Club aims to become a place for leisure and to encourage healthy and sustainable activities and beat a sedentary lifestyle.

In addition to the sports areas, the plan envisages building coworking areas and a kindergarten that will enable many Club users to combine work and / or family commitments with leisure.
Given the considerable design challenges, this design studio has opted for the use of a BIM Authoring software (specifically Edificius by ACCA software) beginning with a technical-financial feasibility study.Implementation of functional and efficient sports facilities

All the sports facilities have been designed to meet homologation parameters in terms of energy efficiency, having the following criteria:
  1. Lighting quality: playing fields lighting with high energy efficiency LED systems. The playing fields have been illuminated with high-efficiency LED floodlights to achieve the levels of lighting required by the Federations (300 lux) with quality control (uniformity, intensity and anti-glare).
  2. Energy quality and shape of the pressostatic winter covers: construction of double-membrane roofs.
In recent years, three new double membrane (with high energy efficiency) pressostatic roofs have been created to have indoor courts during winter. Roofs have been co-designed in order to obtain an ideal conformation for the competitive approval of the courts. In particular, the roof of the two padel tennis courts was implemented with an innovative methodology (unique in Italy) which provides for the construction of a perimeter stand in prestressed concrete simply resting on the ground to support the pressostatic roof. Therefore obtaining a building for 200 spectators.
  3. Quality building envelope: Construction of a tennis venue with a high energy efficiency fixed structure and acoustic climate control.
The tennis venue has been created from the remodelling of a steel structure from the 70s. The new curtain walls have been made with sandwich panels in sheet metal with 10 cm interposed polyurethane. In addition, a study was carried out on the acoustic climate to dampen the echo of the blows through a sound absorbing wall in the first 2ml.
  4. Architectural and landscape quality: Building common spaces (club house and external areas) that restore the image of a healthy environment integrated in the surrounding environment.
The transition into “immersive” virtual reality enabled by BIM technology allowed to implement formal choices in agreement with the Client.

Innovative use of BIM methodologies to overcome project challenges
The most complex aspects of the design phase concern the structures geometry, in order to obtain the relating approvals and to respect the established budget.
The above listed objectives have been fulfilled through the adoption of BIM design methods (totally carried out by the architect’s studio) and file sharing systems in Cloud for real-time sharing of the project models between companies.
In this way, the executive files (IFC or CAD) provided by the company were then integrated in the original BIM model.

Aspects of sustainability management and results achieved
From a management perspective, the drastic reduction in energy consumption (65%) allows to generate important operating budget margins.
The quality of the sports facilities, on the other hand, has generated considerable positive feedback from both competitive and non-competitive users. The number of members has been increasing since the past three years.

Reception: comparison project redering – implementation
In the years 2015 and 2016 the new Sports Club was selected to host ATP professional tennis tournaments exceeding all the required standards.
